Eskom uses stockpiles as coal miners strike

ESKOM is having to rely on stockpiles to generate electricity at its Matimba, Arnot and Matla power stations as the unprotected industrial action at Exxaro — the main coal supplier to the stations — went into its second week and wildcat strikes spread to other mining operations.

Talks between Exxaro and the National Union of Mineworkers branch leadership at its sites were under way to end the impasse that has disrupted thermal coal supplies to the national grid…

(Comment: Anton Eberhard said that the strike would have to go on for more than six weeks to cause serious problems for Eskom.)
