Eskom in scramble to head off new power crisis

SOUTH Africa’s electricity supply is back on a knife-edge, with demand exceeding supply on most days last week, forcing Eskom into taking extraordinary measures to supply factories and mines and to keep the lights on for consumers.

Among other measures, the ailing power utility now wants to “buy back” another 1,000MW from its big users, as it scrambles to lift capacity ahead of winter…
