Nuclear waste: bury it deep, say the planners

Don’t expect the cut and thrust of debate when nuclear waste planners gather to discuss what to do with the world’s tonnes of radioactive spent fuel.

That argument is over, an international conference heard Monday.

We have to bury it deep, delegates were told. And we have to do it now.

“There is no alternative to geological disposal,” bluntly declared Luis Echavarri, of the OECD’s Nuclear Energy Agency…

(Editor’s note: The waste figure quoted, 240 000 tonnes, doesn’t include weapon’s grade nuclear material which is also being stored whilst we figure out what to do with it – use it or bury it.)
