Distributed generation is here

SAAEA 20 September 2012.

Say what you will about the smart grid, the strongest grid may be no grid at all.

The electrical power grid is under pressure as capacity continually increases, and cascading outages or systemic collapse are problems that are becoming increasingly likely. The solution: distributed generation…
(Editor’s note: A somewhat optimistic view by a vendor! With no grid, there would be no continuity of power unless we each invest in our own energy storage system – which is too expensive at present. The grid is needed to average out the fluctuating output of widely distributed renewal energy sources, so that power is always available everywhere, even with high proportions of wind and PV power. So we do need a smart grid.)
